UMass Dartmouth Sinks Worcester State, 69-64

N. Dartmouth, MA --- UMass Dartmouth sophomore Kelsey Garrity (Somerville, MA) finished with a game-best 18 points with seven swipes and six helpers to help lead the Corsairs to a 69-64 triumph over Worcester State in non-conference women's basketball this evening.

The Corsairs (4-0) were also paced by senior Colleen Moriarty (Canton, MA) who tallied 15 points and five boards while junior Erika Bornemann (Canton, MA) chipped in with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Senior Meaghan O'Keefe (Warren, MA) propelled the Lancers (1-2) in the losing effort with her first double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds as second-year Shannen El-Qasem (Worcester, MA/Wachusett) added 14 points of her own on an 6-for-8 performance from the floor.

Junior Meaghan Burns (E. Brookfield, MA) registered 11 points of a 7-for-9 line from the charity stripe and sophomore Meghan Keohane (Mansfield, MA) came off the bench to produce 11 points and five caroms.

As UMass Dartmouth led 48-41 with 11:47 left to play, the Blue and Gold outscored the hosts 19-3 over the next seven minutes to open up 60-52 game at the 4:34 mark on the back end of consecutive trey's by second-year Kelli McPherson (Mansfield, MA).

But the Corsairs answered and ultimately won the contest on their final run of the contest.

With the six point Lancer lead at the 3:03 mark (62-56), they took advantage of solid shooting at the charity stripe, five WSU miscues and finished with a 13-2 surge to end the game.

After senior Kara Rogers (Lowell, MA) canned a pair of free throws to make the score 64-60 with 1:04 left, Garrity sank a lay-up and Bornemann nailed a three-pointer to take the one-point edge (65-64).

In the contests final moments, UMD hit their last four shots from the charity stripe following two Lancer turnovers to ice the game.

The opening frame saw 12 lead changes and five ties – with the Corsairs holding as much as an eight point lead with 6:11 remaining – as UMass Dartmouth finished the period with the slight 36-35 margin at the intermission.

To start off the second half it was more of the same at the beginning, but UMD snapped a 40-40 tie at the 16:35 mark with a 8-1 run before the Lancers went on their scoring spree midway through the final period.

For the contest, UMass Dartmouth turned 13 steals into over one-third of their final point total (24) and led in second chance points (13-10). Worcester State controlled the backboards (35-32), but the hosts had the upper hand on the offensive glass (12-7).

The Lancers were consistent from the field for the game connecting for 48 percent (23-for-48) and they buried 77 percent of their attempts from the free throw line (13-for-17).

UMD hit a modest 40 percent of their shots for the contest (23-for-58) and were limited to making five of their 18 attempts from downtown.

The Blue and Gold will play on Sunday against Rhode Island College at 1 o'clock after the holiday while the Corsairs host Bridgewater State on Tuesday at 7 PM.
