(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - The 14-ranked Thomas More College women's basketball team fell, 84-75, to No. 1-ranked Calvin College tonight (Friday, November 23, 2012) on the first day of the 11th Annual Julie Costello Memorial Classic presented by Barleycorn's at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.

With the loss, the Saints fall to 3-1 on the season.  With the win, the Knights improve to 3-1.

Calvin jumped out to an 8-3 lead when Kayla Engelhard made two free-throws with 16:50 to play in the game.  Thomas More answered with a 14-7 run capped by a three-pointer by junior guard Katie Kitchen (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) to take a 17-15 lead with 8:10 to play in the half.  The Knight responded with a 7-0 run to take a 22-17 lead with 5:15 to play in the half when Kelsey Irwin made a three-pointer.  The Saints cut the lead to 26-25 with 2:02 to play in the game when junior guard Devin Beasley (Burlington, Ky./Conner) capped an 8-4 run with a three-pointer.  Calvin closed out the half on a 4-0 run to take a 30-25 lead at intermission when Engelhard made a lay-up with 1:08 to play in the first half.

Calvin opened the second half on a 14-7 run to build a 44-32 lead when Julia Hilbrands made one-of-two free-throws with 15:18 to play in the second half.  Thomas More answered with a 22-3 run to take a 54-47 lead with 8:12 to play in the regulation when freshman forward Alexa Santamaria (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) made a lay-up.  Calvin responded with a 7-4 run to cut the lead to 58-54 with 5:49 to play in the second half when Carissa Verkaik made a jumper.  The Saints put together an 8-0 run to build a 66-54 lead with 2:52 to play in the game when Beasley made one-of-two free-throws.  Calvin closed out regulation on a 15-3 run to force overtime when Irwin made a three-pointer with nine-seconds to play to tie the game at 69-69.

In overtime, the Knight out-scored Thomas More 15-6 to win the game, 84-75.

Beasley led three Saints in double-figures scoring with a season-high 27 points.  Joining her in double-figures were senior guard Allison Long (Hebron, Ky./Conner) with 18 points and Kitchen with 15 points.  Santamaria led the team in rebounds with eighth, while Long led the team in assists with four and junior guard Nakaharra Gaines (Fairdale, Ky./Fairdale) led the team in steals with four.

Thomas More returns to action tomorrow when it hosts Capital University at 5 p.m. on the second day of the Julie Costello Memorial Classic.
