Northwestern topples Macalester

Northwestern-Roseville trailed by a point at halftime, but held the Scots to 20 second half points to gain a 59-50 decision over Macalester at the Leonard Center.  The Eagles were 7-for-16 on three-pointers to spoil Mac's home opener.

 

The Scots drop to 1-2 on the young season, while Northwestern is 2-1.

 

Veronika Jakubovie (Jr., Maple Grove, Minn.)  finished with 12 points and eight rebounds to lead Macalester, while Emma Leyden (Jr., Berkeley, Calif. / Head-Royce) added 11 points.  Kyanna Jones (Sr., Brooklyn Park, Minn. / Osseo) had eight points, seven rebounds and six steals, while Kathryn Medinger (Jr., Sitka, Alaska) grabbed eight boards.  Jones has 15 steals through three games and also leads the team in scoring and assists.

 

Northwestern led for much of the opening period, but at the 4:06 mark the Scots went on a 10-0 run to go up 27-25.  Macalester led 30-29 at the break.  The Eagles re-gained control in the second half with a 15-5 start to the period and led by as many as 10 at 47-37 with 8:55 to go.  Mac hung tough and was within four points at 52-48 on a Taylor Pike three-pointer with 2:40 remaining, but NWC held on.

 

The Eagles were led by Chanel Madson with 15 points and Mollie Sir with 14.  Jessica Fife had eight points and 11 boards.

 

The Scots open MIAC play next Wednesday (Nov. 28) at St. Thomas.
