– Freshman Dylan Krause (Atlanta, Ga.) registered her first collegiate double-double (16 points / 16 rebounds) and junior Molly Spadaro (Sewell, N.J.) added her first double-double of the year as well to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team to a 61-45 win over the College of Staten Island. The victory moves the Ducks to 3-0 on the year.
The matchup was tight at the start, with the teams trading points over the first 10 minutes. Then, the Dolphins went on the first hot streak of the game and pushed their lead to six points with 8:25 to go in the first half – the largest lead of the game until that point.
After battling back to tie, it was Spadaro's three-point shot with three and a half minutes left before the break that swung the momentum and the score back to Stevens' favor. The Ducks were able to hang on to a 29-26 lead through halftime.
As the second half began the Women of Hoboken were able to extend their lead all the way to 10 points on a layup by Miranda Ripken (Fallston, Md.). CSI never got in striking distance again; after a 5-0 mini-run that cut the lead down to six, Spadaro came up with a steal and quickly set up Krause for a lay-in. That bucket started a 7-0 run the other way from which Staten Island never recovered. The Dolphins fell to 0-3 on the season.
Spadaro shot 4-of-6 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc…Maggie Kowalska (Edison, N.J.) also pulled down double-digit rebounds (11) for Stevens…The Ducks easily won the battle of the boards, where the count was 63-37…Stevens held the Dolphins to just 24 percent shooting…CSI attempted 38 three-pointers and made just five of them.
The Ducks will have their home opener on Saturday at 2 p.m. when they will entertain in-state rival William Paterson University. The Pioneers were ranked No. 23 in the nation to start the year. Stevens upset No. 6 William Paterson 69-68 last season.
