Meagan Stover '13 scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed a team-best nine rebounds as SUNY Oswego defeated Hamilton College 42-31 in a non-conference game at Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Nov. 20.
Stover added three blocked shots and three steals for the Lakers, who improved to 3-0. Kari Kipper '13 chipped in eight points and Evelyn Josbena '13 posted eight rebounds and three steals.
Eliza Howe '13 scored all 10 of her points in the second half and pulled down seven rebounds for the Continentals (0-3 overall). Madie Harlem '13 finished with eight points, nine boards, three assists and two blocked shots. Serena Ward '16 dropped in seven points in her first start. Kim Goidell '13 played all 40 minutes and recorded eight rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots.
There were five ties and neither team led by more than five points in a low-scoring but tight first half. Goidell gave Hamilton an 18-17 lead with 21 seconds left when she made the second of two free throws.
Oswego seized the lead for good with an 11-0 run that started with a 3-point play by Stover with 5 seconds remaining. The Lakers led 20-18 at the break and proceeded to score the first eight points of the second half. Stover scored six of those eight points, including a layup that ended the run with 16:37 left.
The Continentals didn't make a basket until Howe's jumper made it 32-24 with 8:48 remaining. Howe made four free throws earlier in the half. Hamilton climbed back to within four points at 34-30 on another Howe jumper with 5:33 left, but didn't get any closer. Stover scored five more points for Oswego down the stretch. The Continentals shot just 13.6 percent from the field in the second half.
Neither team shot well from the field. The Lakers finished at 32.6 percent (14-43) and Hamilton shot 20.8 percent (11-53). Oswego was 0-for-12 from long range while the Continentals were 1-for-16 from beyond the arc. Hamilton held a 40-37 edge in rebounds thanks to 15 on the offensive glass.
The Lakers have held all three of their opponents under 40 points. The Continentals still lead the all-time series, 16-8. The last time these teams met was in 2008-09.
Hamilton travels to Union College for another non-conference game on Wednesday, Nov. 28. Oswego opens its SUNYAC schedule at home against SUNY Plattsburgh on Friday, Nov. 30.
