CLINTON, N.Y. – Senior Meagan Stover (Lake George, N.Y.) matched her career-high 22 points to help guide the Oswego State women's basketball team to a 42-31 non-conference victory over Hamilton (0-3) Tuesday night. Stover also turned in nine rebounds, three blocks and three steals.
Each team went back and forth throughout the first half until Kari Kipper (Sr., Loudonville, N.Y.) found Stover cutting in the lane for a layup, while drawing a foul with five seconds remaining. Stover converted the three-point play to give the Lakers a 20-18 lead at halftime.
Oswego State opened the second half by scoring the frame's first eight points to build a double-digit advantage with 14 minutes to play. The Laker defense held Hamilton scoreless for nearly the first six minutes until Eliza Howe sank two free throws. Howe pulled the Continentals to within four points at 34-30 with 5:33 on the scoreboard, but that would be as close as the hosts got as Stover scored on the next trip down the floor.
Both teams struggled from long range as Hamilton went 1-for-16 and Oswego State went 0-for-12, which marked the first time since January 9, 2007 that the Lakers did not hit a three-pointer. Oswego State shot 32.6 percent from the floor (14-43) and 60.9 percent from the free throw line. The Continentals went 21.2 percent from the field (11-52) and 61.5 percent from the charity stripe.
Kipper added eight points and six rebounds, while Paula Egelston (Jr., Fultonville, N.Y.) compiled six points and boards. Howe paced Hamilton with ten points and seven rebounds.
Oswego State will host Plattsburgh on Friday, November 30 at 6 p.m. in Laker Hall.
