Brooklyn Downs Farmingdale in Consolation Game of Amherst Tip-Off Tournament

Amherst, MA --- The Brooklyn College Women's Basketball team edged out the Rams of Farmingdale State College, 56-52, in the consolation game of the Amherst College Tip-Off Tournament on Sunday afternoon. BC moves to an even 1-1 overall on the year, while Farmingdale drops to 0-2 overall on the season.

Brooklyn was led by sophomore Nicole Francomano, who led the team with 14 points, five assists and three steals, en route to being named to the All-Tournament team. Senior Charnelle Saint Laurent added 13 points, five steals and four assists, while classmate Brittany Bowen finished with 10 points. Junior Vanessa D'Ambrosi grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds, to go along with seven points.

For Farmingdale, Nicky Young and Nikita Green each notched 15 points, while Christina Merrill chipped in with 12 points. Green added nine rebounds and seven assists.

After Young scored the first bucket of the game for the Rams, the Bulldogs jumped out on an 11-1 run to take an eight point lead, 11-3, at the 14:05 mark of the half. Bowen led the run scoring five of the 11 points. Farmingdale would cut their deficit down to two on a number of occasions; however, the Bulldogs would never relinquish their lead, as BC took a 25-21 halftime advantage.

The second half featured a tight battle with six lead changes.  Following a jumper from Young which gave the Rams a one point lead, 37-36, with 11:23 remaining in the game, the Bulldogs used a 14-0 run to take a 13-point lead, 50-37, at the 7:06 mark of the second period. Bowen and Saint Laurent sparked the run with a pair of big three pointers, while Francomano and senior Tiffany Thompson each contributed with four points in during the run.

The deficit would be too much for the Rams to overcome, as the Bulldogs would edge out a 56-52 victory.

For the game, BC shot 37.3% (19-51) from the field, while shooting 28.0% (7-25) from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs also shot 64.7% (11-17) from the free throw line. Farmingdale shot 34.5% (20-58) from the field and 35.0% (7-20) from three. The Rams also shot 35.7% (5-14) from the line.

Brooklyn will be back in action this Tuesday, November 20th, as the Bulldogs will play host to SUNY College at Old Westbury. The game is slated for a 6:15 pm start time at the West Quad Center. The game was originally scheduled to be played at Old Westbury; however, the game was moved to Brooklyn due to Old Westbury's gym being used as an evacuation center from the after effects of Hurricane Sandy.
