GREENSBORO, N.C. --- Brittany Drew had team-high 15 points in Guilford's 70-54 win over North Carolina Wesleyan College Saturday night in the Ragan-Brown Field House. The contest marked the second of four games in the Daly Seven Hotels Classic. York (Pa.) College defeated Roanoke College, 57-34, in Saturday's tournament opener.
Guilford fell behind, 5-0, in the game's opening minutes, but scored 10 of the next 12 points to take the lead. Drew finished with nine first-half points, including a three-pointer 23 seconds before halftime that sent the Quakers into the locker room with a 33-28 lead. Guilford's Brittany Atwater and Gabby Oglesby combined to score the first 10 points of the second half and the Quakers never looked back.
Quakers' junior Morgan King notched her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Atwater finished with 11 points, four rebounds and three assists. Oglesby contributed eight points and 11 boards. Teammatc Jaclyn Nucci was solid with eight points, nine rebounds, six assists and five steals.
Guilford held the Bishops (0-1) to just over 25 percent shooting from the floor and forced 17 turnovers that led to 20 points. Samantha Urquhart paced N.C. Wesleyan with a 16 points and 12 rebounds, both game highs. The senior forward made 12-of-14 free throws. Leann Breeden contributed 14 points, including 12 from beyond the arc, and seven rebounds. Derreon Cole added 10 points.
In Saturday's opening game, Brittany Hicks had 15 points and 13 rebounds to lead nationally ranked York (Pa.) past Roanoke. While the Spartans (2-0) managed only 34.5 percent shooting from the floor, their defense held the Maroons (0-2) to 16.2% field-goal shooting. York held a 37-13 halftime lead and put three students in double-figure scoring. Kristen Haley tallied 13 points and 13 rebounds. Kelsey Murphy added 10 points and Aja Wallpher dished out a game-high eight assists.
Paxton Gwin led Roanoke with 13 points.
The four-team classic tournament concludes Sunday (11/18) when Roanoke plays N.C. Wesleyan at 1:00 p.m., followed by Guilford versus York (Pa.) at 3:00 p.m. Both games will be played in the Ragan-Brown Field House on Guilford's campus.
