No. 23/25 William Paterson Women’s Basketball Falls at No. 12/15 Amherst

AMHERST, MASS. – The No. 23/25 William Paterson women's basketball team (1-1) suffered an 88-61 loss to host No. 12/15 Amherst (2-0) Nov. 18 in the final of the Amherst Tip-Off Tournament.

 

Junior guard Floriana Borova (Cresskill, N.J./Cresskill) led all players with 22 points, adding six rebounds and a team-best four assists.  Junior forward Dana Jeter (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) finished with 11 tallies and seven rebounds, sophomore forward Ashley Marfo (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) collected a team-high eight rebounds, and senior guard Lindsey Callander (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) posted nine points.

 

The Pioneers dominated the early play, running out to a 17-4 lead less than nine minutes into the contest, but a 15-3 Jeff run evened the score at 26-26 with 1:17 remaining, and Amherst scored the final four points of the half to carry a 30-28 lead into the break.

 

A 25-5 burst early in the second half gave the Jeffs control of the game at 66-44 with 8:12 to play, as Amherst shot 60.0 (21-35) percent from the field during the game's final 20 minutes, including a 7-for-10 (.700) effort from three-point range.

 

Marley Giddens tallied 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Jeffs, and Megan Robertson posted 17 tallies and 15 boards.

 

William Paterson will open its home slate Tuesday, Nov. 20, against The College of New Jersey at 6:00 p.m.
