Spartan Women Win CMU DoubleTree Classic; Iacono MVP, Iafelice All-Tournament Team

PITTSBURGH – Senior wing Marissa Miles (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) scored a team-high 12 points as the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team defeated Wesley College (Del.) on the final day of the 2012 CMU DoubleTree Classic at Skibo Gymnasium.

The Spartans improve to 2-0 and will open the home portion of the schedule this Tuesday, November 20 versus cross-town rival Baldwin Wallace University at 7:30 p.m. at Horsburgh Gymnasium. With the loss, Wesley drops to 0-2.

Miles was 5-for-7 from the field and added five rebounds. Also for the Spartans, senior guard Evy Iacono (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame), sophomore guard Brooke Orcutt (Morrison, Colo./Dakota Ridge) and freshman forward Laura Mummey (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) all scored nine. Mummey and Iacono led the rebounding effort with nine and seven boards, respectively.

For the weekend, Iacono was named the tournament Most Valuable Player, while senior point guard Erica Iafelice (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) was tabbed to the all-tourney team.

The Spartans sprinted out of the gate with a 12-2 run that ended in the second three-pointer of the game for Miles at 16:18. From there, Case maintained a lead of at least five and built its advantage to as many as 13 at 34-21 when Orcutt completed a 6-0 run with an old-fashioned three-point play with 2:18 left before half. Wesley was only able to trim one off of its deficit heading into the locker room as Iafelice hit a triple in the final seconds to make the score 37-25.

In the second, Case opened on a 13-2 run that put the game out of reach. Mummey hit a free throw at 14:20 that made the score 50-27. The Spartan lead reached a high of 35, at 70-35, when freshman guard Brittany Glaser (Mansfield, Ohio/Lexington) hit a free throw.

For the game, the Spartans held Wesley to 27.8 percent shooting from the field. Case also won the battle on the boards, 50-32.

The Wolverines were led by Jazmine Miller with a game-high 19 points.
