The Albright College women's basketball team never trailed in its 2012-13 season opener, as the Lions defeated Immaculata 69-55 in a Jim Crawley Tip-Off Tournament semifinal.
Sophomore Tara Sabotchick was 7-of-9 from the floor and led the team with 14 points. As a group, the Lions shot an impressive 53.3% from the floor and made 76% of their free throws.
Sophomore Jessica Venturelli was in double-figures with 11 points, and senior Kari Ludy added 10 points and four assists. Junior Shawn Barczynski had seven points and nine boards in her return from injury.
Sabotchick's lay-up after just nine seconds gave Albright a lead they would never relinquish. Ludy and Venturelli followed with baskets as the Lions led 6-0 after a minute and a half of play.
Sophomore Amanda Tiritilli hit a three-pointer as the Lions ran off to a 14-2 start. It was soon 24-5 as freshman Kelecia Harris scored and then fellow rookie Kadijah Bishop finished off a three-point play.
Albright led by as much as 19 in the first half, following two free throws by Tiritilli. The Mighty Macs fought back to within four late in the period, but Venturelli ended the half with two free throws as the Red and White responded.
Sabotchick scored five minutes after the break to push the gap back to 15 points, 48-33. Albright would lead by as much as 23, after a three-point play by Barczynski.
Chrissy Esbensen led Immaculata with 12 points and five steals, while Alison Zimny also had 12 points to go with five rebounds and four assists.
The Lions start the season at 1-0 with a victory over a school that once won three consecutive Division I national championships back in the 1970s. Albright will face Rowan in tomorrow's final (4 p.m.), after the Profs defeated host Frostburg State 62-56 today.
