UW-Stout gets first win with comebacks in first and second halfs

MILWAUKEE (November 17, 2012) - Katelynne Folkers (So, Fall Creek) scored 13 of her team-high 16 points in the first half to bring UW-Stout back from a 10-point deficit and the Blue Devils eventually went on for the 62-56 win over Hamline University in the consolation game of the Wisconsin Lutheran Tournament Saturday.

Trailing 23-13, Shelby Sterba (So, Tony) sparked a 16-0 run with a bucket with 7:02 left in the first half. Folkers took over, scoring 11 points in a three-minute stretch that helped the Blue Devils (1-1) to as much as a seven point lead late in the half.

The Pipers (0-2) came back to take a 31-30 halftime lead, then led for much of the second half, with as much as an eight point lead before Stout chipped away.

Sparked by nine second half points by senior Whitney Rawdon (Eau Claire), the Blue Devils took the lead, 54-52, with 4:19 remaining in the game and Stout never trailed again, although the Pipers did twice tie the game.

Brea Boomer (So, Grand Portage, Minn) dropped in a pair of free throws with 24 seconds left to give Stout a four-point, 60-56 lead and Kayla Windt (Sr, Pence) drained two chartiy shots with 11 seconds remaining to seal the win.

Folkers finished the game 16 points and six rebounds, while Rawdon finished with 14 points and nine rebounds. Boomer was the third starter to score in double figures, finishing with 10 points.

The Blue Devils controlled the boards, with Stout pulling down 55 rebounds to Hamline's 44. Stout's Sami Schoeder (Jr, Durand) came off the bench to yank down a career-best 10 rebounds.

Hamline's Jordan Sammons led all scorers with 21 points and Steph Pilgram finished with 15.

Stout will host NCAA Division II St. Cloud State, Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 6 p.m. The Blue Devils will host the quality Inn and Suites Turkey Shootout, Nov. 24-25, meeting St. Scholastica, Saturday, Nov. 24 and Martin Luther College, Sunday, Nov. 25.
