MILWAUKEE -- Two games in one day was not enough for the Alverno College women's basketball team, as the Inferno played a pair of overtime periods to cap off the extended day. Unfortunately for Alverno, it came out on the wrong side of the decision in a 60-52 double-overtime loss to visiting Stephens College in the second game of the inaugural Women's College Tipoff Tournament in Reiman Gymnasium.

Due to a last minute cancellation by a team who originally agreed to the participate in the tournament, some creative rescheduling came into play and the host Inferno made history by playing two games today. The Inferno defeated St. Catherine University, 67-45, this afternoon before the nightcap against the Stars (2-2).

The visiting Stars outscored the Inferno, 9-1, in the second overtime period for the victory, after a 5-5 deadlock in the first extra period.

Alverno (1-1) was unable to score from the field in either overtime (0-for-7), as its only points came from the free-throw line (6-of-8). The Inferno shot just 50 percent (9-of-18) from the line in regulation.

The Inferno trailed 46-42 before Kayla Kennedy buried a pair of free throws with 36 seconds left in regulation, and after a Stars' turnover, the senior guard evened the game on a Devon Gorman pass with just 13 seconds remaining.

The Stars got off a shot in the final seconds, but the Inferno's defense held to force the first overtime.

Down 50-49 with 32 seconds left in the first overtime, Kennedy gave the Inferno a lead with a pair of free throws, but the Stars' Dana Heggemann made one of two just seconds later to even the game again.

Kristen Speerschneider's driveto the hoops in the final seconds was blocked by Heggemann for force another period.

The Inferno could not get the ball to fall in the second overtime, as a few Inferno players were well past 80 minutes of playing time on the day, while the fresh-legged Stars pulled out in front for good.

Heggemann led all players with 17 points, 16 rebounds and four blocks.

Gorman -- who fouled out of the game with 1:45 to go in the first overtime -- led the Inferno with 13 points, while Speerschneider added 11 and Anna Boteva chipped in 10.

Kennedy was the top rebounder for the Inferno with 12, while Jamie Hoernke snagged 10 and Gorman had eight.

Alverno limited the Stars to just 30 percent shooting from the floor, but managed 29 percent itself.

The Stars will take on St. Catherine in the final game of the Women's College Tipoff Tournament on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Alverno returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 24, as it hosts Concordia University Wisconsin to open up Northern Athletics Conference play at 7 p.m.
