#18 Spartans Lackluster in Victory over Roanoke

GREENSBORO, NC – The York College women's basketball team overcame spotty shooting and 24 turnovers to post a 57-34 victory over Roanoke in the opening round of the Daly Seven Hotels Classic hosted by Guilford College in Greensboro, NC.

The Spartans improve to 2-0 while the Maroons fall to 0-2. York is ranked #18 in the d3Hoops.com Poll and #19 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll.

The Spartans trailed early as the Maroons held a 6-5 lead just over four minutes into the game. The Spartans then ripped off a huge 29-2 run, turning the deficit into a 26 point lead. The Green and White would take a 37-13 advantage to the break.

The Spartans were very sluggish in the second half as they committed 14 turnovers and shot just 20% from the floor. The Maroons actually outscored the Spartans 21-20 in the second half.

York was led by junior forwards Brittany Hicks (Dover, Pa./York Catholic) and Kristen Haley (Silver Spring, Md./Georgetown Visitation) as they both posted their second double-doubles of the year. Hicks tallied 15 points and 13 rebounds while Haley had 13 points and 13 rebounds. The double-double for Hicks was the 13th of her career while it was Haley's 20th of her Spartan career. Hicks was 4-for-9 from the floor including 1-of-2 from three while she canned 6-of-7 from the free throw line. Haley was 6-for-12 from the field and 1-for-2 from the line.

Fellow junior Kelsey Murphy (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) was the third Spartan in double figures with 10 points in 30 minutes of action. Junior Aja Wallpher (Ellicott City, Md./Seton Keough) handed out eight assists while she also had four steals, four rebounds, and two points.

Paxton Gwin led the Maroons with 12 points and seven rebounds. She was the lone Roanoke player to reach double figures.

The Spartans finished the game shooting 34.5% from the floor and 29.4% (5-for-17) from three. The Green and White canned 12-of-16 (75%) from the free throw line.

York held Roanoke to just 16.2% shooting from the floor including 3-for-25 (12%) from three. The Maroons went 7-of-10 from the charity stripe.

York has held their first two opponents of the year to just 23.8% shooting from the floor and 12.8% (5-for-39) from three.

The task on Sunday will be far more formidable as the Green and White faces host Guilford. The Quakers are also 2-0 as they rolled past NC Wesleyan 70-54 on Saturday. Tip time is set for 3:00 pm in Greensboro.
