Mahwah, N.J. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team opened the 2012-13 season on Friday night with a 55-45 loss to Suffolk at the Roadrunner Tip-Off Tournament. Sophomore Kelly Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) was one of two Dolphins in double-figures on the night, leading the team with 16 points.
The Dolphins never led in the contest on Friday and fell behind by as many as 14 in the first half after a Jennifer Ruys jumper pushed the Rams in front 26-12 with just under six minutes left before halftime.
Mount Saint Vincent got back to within 10 at the intermission after an Andrea Sinaly (Middle Village, N.Y.) bucket with 27 seconds left in the half. It was one of only nine field goals for the Dolphins before the break, as they shot 30-percent from the floor.
Mount Saint Vincent came out of the break and quickly got the lead down to four points after a Tanisha Montague (Brooklyn, N.Y.) three-pointer and a pair of Shannon Kich (Kings Park, N.Y.) free-throws.
Following the Koch conversions from the stripe, the Rams used a 19-3 run over nearly 10 minutes to build their largest lead of the night at 51-31. The Mount Saint Vincent deficit would remain in double-figures the rest of the night.
Fraser finished the night 6-for-16 from the floor on her way to matching the game-high with 16 points. She also hauled in seven rebounds for the Dolphins and blocked a game-high four shots.
Koch finished the night with 13 points for the Dolphins after going 5-for-11 from the floor and also added three assists and four boards. Montague chipped in with five points and team-highs in assists with six and steals with four.
Suffolk also placed two players in double-figures with Lindsey Rogers scoring 16 points to lead the way, but only five after halftime, on 6-for-11 shooting. Ruys tallied 14 times for the Rams, while Jacqueline Vienneau led all players in the game with 10 rebounds and seven assists.
For the night, Mount Saint Vincent shot 28.3-percent from the floor and just 3-for-10 from behind the arc. The Rams shot 36.5-percent overall on the night and outscored the Dolphins 6-0 in the paint and 12-7 in second chance points.
The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 0-1 in the early going this season. The Dolphins will look to get in the win column on Saturday afternoon when they take on Medgar Evers. Tip-Off for the consolation round is set for 1:00 p.m.
