The 22nd-ranked Emory University women's basketball team started its 2012-13 season off with a victory on Friday night, besting Spelman College 94-37 in the opening contest of the Emory Tipoff Classic at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.

Emory senior co-captain Misha Jackson led a group of four Eagles with double-digit points, scoring a game-high 19.  She finished the game with a career-high 17 rebounds, the 10th-highest mark in a single game in the program's history, and the most by any Eagle since Mary Dick set the school record with 23 rebounds in 1991.

Emory wasted little time getting into the swing of the season, starting the game on a 12-0 run through the first 3:06 of play.  After Spelman scored its first basket of the game with 16:33 remaining in the half, preseason all-American Hannah Lilly responded with a three, and Jackson picked up a pair of scores in the paint to balloon the Eagles' lead to 19-2 and forcing the Jaguars to take their second time out.

The Eagles' lead grew to as large as 25 on three separate occasions in the first half, and with a pair of free throws by Jackson to end the first 20 minutes, Emory led by 25, 46-21 at the half.  Jackson finished the first half with a double-double, recording game-highs with 17 points and 11 rebounds.  Junior guard Savannah Morgan added six first half assists.

The second half proved to be more of the same for the Eagles, who would grow their lead to as high as 62 points with 1:32 remaining in the contest.  In addition to Jackson's performance, Lilly added 12 points in the game for Emory, while seniors Katie Dickerson and Danielle Landry each contributed with 10.

The Eagles shot 44.8% from the field on the day (40-for-89) and forced Spelman to commit 32 turnovers.  Emory outrebounded the Jaguars 59-31 in the contest, including a 32-9 edge in offensive rebounds.  The 59 rebounds for the Eagles were the seventh-most in a game in the program's history.

Emory stands at 1-0 on the season, improving to 16-9 all-time in season-opening games with Friday night's victory.

With the victory, the Eagles advance to the championship game of the Emory Tipoff Classic on Saturday at 8:00 PM.  Emory will face the winner of the Friday night contest between Rose-Hulman and Piedmont.

Spelman dropped to 0-1 for the campaign with the loss, and will face the loser of the Rose-Hulman/Piedmont game on Saturday at 6:00 PM in the consolation game.
