Utica 58, Potsdam 35 - Women's Basketball Final

Potsdam, NY (11/15/2012) – The Utica College women's basketball team held host Potsdam State to a dismal 26.5% shooting from the floor on its way to a convincing 58-35 victory in the season-opener for both squads at Welch Gymnasium Thursday night.  The Pioneers have now won four consecutive season-openers over the Bears.  Senior forward Meghan Fiore (Epping, NH/Epping) recorded a double-double as she netted 25 points and snagged 12 rebounds to pace the visitors. Freshman Mary Miceli (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) added 12 points and seven rebounds in her first collegiate game off the bench for UC.

The Pioneers forced 24 turnovers which resulted in 25 points and they also added 28 points in the paint and 14 second-chance points. 

Potsdam opened the game by controlling the lead for the first nine minutes until UC shook off the rust and used a 20-6 run over the course of 10:23 to close out the first half with a strong 11 point advantage.  Miceli, Fiore and junior forward Bridget Greenwald (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) were the driving force behind the Pioneer charge. Greenwald finished the day with seven points and five rebounds. 

The Pioneers continued to add to their lead in the second half, while holding the Bears to just 16 points in the final 20 minute stretch.  Potsdam scored just five points in the first ten minutes of the second half as UC extended its lead to 21 points at the 10:13 ledger.  That lead increased to as many as 26 late in the second half to help Utica secure the victory. 

Alyssa Filkins (Castleton, NY/Maple Hill) scored five points, while Brittany Baudanza (Staten Island, NY/Staten Island) added three points and Christy Traglia (Mohawk, NY/Mohawk) chipped in with seven rebounds (six offensive) and three steals. Samantha Stayer (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) came off the bench and netted three points, grabbed three boards and added three assists for UC. The Pioneers knocked down 17-of-23 chances at the charity stripe. 

Katy Briedis led Potsdam with 12 points.

Utica returns to the hardwood on Saturday to square off against Sage College (2 p.m.) prior to returning to the Clark Athletic Center for a four game home stand in a span of six days net week.
