Medaille Women Fall in Season Opener

More news about: Medaille

BUFFALO, NY - The Medaille women's basketball team opened their season on its home floor this evening when they hosted Westminster College. The visiting Titans played spoilers, handing the Lady Mavs a (53-39) loss in their debut.

From the opening tip it seemed it would be a tight game as neither team held more than a five point edge for most of the first half.  The Lady Mavs would break a (17-17) tie on a layup by Brittnee Perry with (5:33) to go in the first half giving Medaille a (19-17) edge.

The tide shifted immensely from that point as Westminster put together a (12-0) run to end the first half, heading into the locker room at the break with a (31-19) lead.  That momentum carried into the second half as they found themselves up (39-22) with (13:57) remaining in the game.  The Lady Mavs would get as close as ten points down the stretch but to no avail.

The Lady Mavs had trouble knocking down all sorts of shots all night as they were held to just (25.9%) shooting overall, (13.3%) from beyond the arc and (43.8%) from the charity stripe.

The Lady Mavs played well defensively as they forced Westminster into (18) turnovers on the night, blocked four shots, and came up with six steals while holding the Titans to (36.1%) shooting from the floor.

In the loss Medaille was led by senior Brittney Rowland who went (5 for 10) from the field for a team high (11) points.  Junior Tara Caples also knocked down half of her shots on a (4 for 8) night, finishing with (8) points and (8) boards.  Rookie Brittnee Perry led the Lady Mavs with ten rebounds in her first collegiate action.

The loss opens the Medaille season at (0-1) and the Lady Mavs will look to get in the win column when they take part in the Durgala Memorial Tournament hosted by Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD where they will face Baruch College on Saturday (11/17) at 3:00pm.
