CHICAGO -- Calvin College's Carissa Verkaik scored a game-high 20 points to help lead the fifth-ranked Knights to a 68-50 win over the second-ranked University of Chicago in the NCAA Division III Sectional Semifinals Friday night at the Ratner Athletics Center.
The win sent Calvin (28-1) into Saturday's sectional final against the University of St. Thomas (29-1), which defeated Tufts University 50-47 in Friday's first contest. Saturday's winner will move on to the Division III Final Four.
Game Summary
- Calvin took the lead for good midway through the first half when a Verkaik layup at the 9:19 mark put the Knights on top 13-12.
- Ally Wolffis' layup in the final minute of the period gave Calvin a 30-20 advantage at the break.
- Julie Muguira hit back-to-back 3-pointers and added a layup in the first two minutes of the second stanza as Chicago trimmed the deficit to 30-28.
- A Muguira basket with 15:59 to go drew the Maroons to within a point, 33-32, but Calvin then went on a 13-4 run to increase its lead to double digits (46-36) at the midway point of the second stanza.
- The Knights went up 56-41 on Kirsten Tripp's jumper with 4:45 to go and remained on top by at least 14 points the rest of the night.
Statistical Highlights
- Verkaik hit six of 10 shots from the field and was perfect on eight free throw attempts.
- Wolffis added 10 points.
- Taylor Simpson led the Maroons with 14 points and seven rebounds. Muguira finished the night with 12 points off the bench.
- Calvin outshot the Maroons 53% to 39%.
Notes
- Chicago finished the year with a school record 27 victories and its third Sweet Sixteen appearance in the past six years.
- The loss snapped the Maroons' 27-game homecourt winning streak.
