Maroons Fall to Calvin in NCAA Sweet Sixteen

CHICAGO -- Calvin College's Carissa Verkaik scored a game-high 20 points to help lead the fifth-ranked Knights to a 68-50 win over the second-ranked University of Chicago in the NCAA Division III Sectional Semifinals Friday night at the Ratner Athletics Center.

The win sent Calvin (28-1) into Saturday's sectional final against the University of St. Thomas (29-1), which defeated Tufts University 50-47 in Friday's first contest. Saturday's winner will move on to the Division III Final Four.

Game Summary

  • Calvin took the lead for good midway through the first half when a Verkaik layup at the 9:19 mark put the Knights on top 13-12.

  • Ally Wolffis' layup in the final minute of the period gave Calvin a 30-20 advantage at the break.

  • Julie Muguira hit back-to-back 3-pointers and added a layup in the first two minutes of the second stanza as Chicago trimmed the deficit to 30-28.
