IWU Women Cruise to 42-Point First Round Win

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – A late start didn't stop the Illinois Wesleyan women's basketball team from getting off to a blazing start en route to a 42 point win (84-42) over Maryville (Tenn.) in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament in Crestview Hills, Ky.

The game started 90 minutes late due to severe weather in the Crestview Hills area as players on the teams were told to remain at their hotels during the severe weather delay.

Illinois Wesleyan improved to 23-5 and will play the winner of the game between host school Thomas More and Louisiana College at 7 p.m. on Saturday with a chance to return to the round of 16.

When the first regional game did get underway IWU exploded out of the gate, leading 13-0 and holding Maryville scoreless for the first 6:02 of the game.

The Scots went without a field goal for nearly 10 minutes in the first half while IWU shot 64.3 percent (18 of 28) from the field and made 8 of 12 3-pointers. In the first 20 minutes, IWU led by a 47-12 score at the half, outrebounded the Scots 21-8 and forced 14 turnovers.

The Titans cooled off some, firing at a 54.9 clip (28 of 51) from the field and making 11 of 19 from beyond the arc.

Senior Olivia Lett scored 25 points and junior Melissa Gardner added 14 in the rout.

The Titans held a commanding 44-26 rebounding edge as senior Karen Solari got a game-high seven caroms.

Maryville (21-7) managed to shoot 24.1 percent from the field (13 of 54) and made 3 of 14 3-pointers. Kiera Payne scored 11 points to pace the Scots.
