FRANKLIN, Ind. (Feb.25) – Franklin College routed Transylvania 67-45 in today's first HCAC Women's Basketball Tournament semifinal contest in the Spurlock Center gym.
The top-seeded Grizzlies, who tied a school record for single-season victories by improving to 24-2 overall, will face No. 2 seed and arch rival Hanover (21-4) in Sunday's 2 p.m. league tourney championship game in the Spurlock gym.
Franklin is ranked 15th in both the D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll and the USA Today/ESPN Division III Top 25 Coaches Poll this week.
The Grizzlies jumped on the Pioneers, scoring the first 11 points of the ballgame. Transylvania got untracked with a 10-2 run to pull within four points at 13-10, but Franklin then answered with a 16-0 blitz to break it open right then and there.
FC held the Pioneers to just 17.4 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes, leading the visitors 37-14 ast the break.
Senior guard Sarah Condra (Nineveh, Ind./Whiteland Community) paced a balanced Grizzly scoring attack with 13 points. Junior point guard Annelise Tarkington (Kokomo, Ind./Northwestern) added 12 points and dished out seven assists.
Junior center Jess Prewett (Washington, Ind./H.S.) chipped in 11 points for Franklin, which shot 41.4 percent from the floor.
The Grizzlies held Transylvania to 27.5 percent shooting for the game and forced the Pioneers into 20 turnovers.
Nicole Coffman and Alex McKenzie were the only two Transy players to score points in double digits with 14 and 10, respectively.
Hanover held a 10-point halftime lead in today's second semifinal contest, but the Panthers broke it open quickly early in the second period on their way to an 85-47 victory.
Franklin swept Hanover in its home-and-home series during the 2011-12 regular season.
The Grizzlies matched Franklin's school record for victories in a women's basketball season. The 1994-95 Grizzlies finished with a 24-2 mark.
