OSHKOSH (February 18, 2012) - Freshmen Shelby Sterba (Tony) and Katelynne Folkers (Fall Creek) delivered from the free throw line down the stretch when it counted most as UW-Stout closed out the 2011-12 campaign with a 65-60 win at UW-Oshkosh Saturday.
Sterba broke a 60-60 tie with 59 seconds remaining in the game by sinking a pair of free throws to give Stout a tenuous lead. Folkers connected on 3-of-4 in the final nine seconds of the game to seal the win.
But it was the veteran Whitney Rawdon (Jr, Eau Claire) who played a key hand in assuring the win. With Stout (7-18, 3-13 WIAC) up 64-60, Rawdon blocked a shot with three seconds remaining. The rebound fell into Folkers' hands, and she was instantly fouled.
The Blue Devils needed to fight back more than once in the game. Oshkosh (7-18, 1-15 WIAC) opened the contest by making 10 of its first 13 shots from the field to build a 23-14 lead. Stout rallied and tied the score at 7:09 in the first half when Bethany Reyzer (Fr, Altoona) scored a four-point play to knot the score at 26.
Stout held a 37-34 halftime lead, then led through much of the second half until the Titans tied the score at 55-55 with 4:50 remaining, then held a lead no bigger than three points until Rawdon hit a jumper to give Stout a 60-59 lead.
The Titans tied the game on a free throw at 1:52, but were denied anymore points the rest of the way.
Reyzer led Stout with 12 points, while Folkers finished with 11 points and a team-high six rebounds. Stout forced 20 Oshkosh turnovers, with Rawdon and Kayla Windt (Jr, Pence) each recording five steals apiece.
The Titans got 17 points from Katie Kitzke and 12 from Megan Wenig. Kelsey Myklebust had a game-high nine rebounds.
Stout held a slight edge at the free throw line, making 19-of-30 attempts, while the Titans made 17-of-20.
