Virginia Wesleyan defeats Hollins for victory No. 20

ROANOKE, Va. -- Rookie Sarah Seipp and Kristen Blalock combined for 28 points Friday to lead Virginia Wesleyan College's regionally-ranked Marlins to a 58-49 Old Dominion Athletic Conference over host Hollins University.

Seipp (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) led all scorers with 16 points, hitting a trio of three-pointers, and Blalock (Suffolk, Va./Portsmouth Christian) added 12 points as Virginia Wesleyan improved to 17-2 overall and to 20-4 overall.  It marks VWC's first 20+ win season since 2008 and its third in the past six years.  The 17 wins ties a program number of ODAC wins for the Marlins.

Virginia Wesleyan rolled to a 34-17 halftime victory and then held off Hollins the rest of the game. The host team rallied back to cut the spread to seven points in the second half, but could get no closer.

The Marlins launched 28 three-pointers and hit nine.  Seipp led that effort with three and Rachael Miller (Sterling, Va./Park View) and Blalock connected on two each.  VWC also hit 11-of-18 free throws, led by sophomore Symonne Newsome (Reistertown, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) who hit 4-of-6.  VWC also out-rebounded Hollins 48-40 led by sophomore Katie Tassa (Bristow, Va./Manassas Osbourn Park) with 11.

Jasmine Green led Hollins with 14 points and Chanci Wright added 13 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

Virginia Wesleyan closes the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 18, competing at Roanoke College at 4 p.m.
