CLINTON, MS - For the first time in three years, the Mississippi College women's basketball team eclipsed the 100-point mark in a 101-67 victory over Centenary College on Thursday night in A.E. Wood Coliseum.
The Lady Choctaws downed Schreiner, 101-56, on December 6, 2008 in the "Golden Dome".
MC (15-8) was led by junior Kristin Newsome, who scored 26 points and pulled down 10 rebounds while going 9-13 from the floor. Newsome also made 8-10 free throws in the contest.
The Lady Choctaws were hot early as they made their first nine shots and took a 10-0 lead just 2:16 into the game. Junior Traci Rodgers made a three-pointer to close out the first half and give MC a 48-22 advantage.
In the second half, the Ladies (8-16) went on an 11-5 run to cut it to a 19-point contest. They would get no closer as the Lady Choctaws pushed the lead out to as many as 42 points at 95-53 with 3:15 remaining.
The starters for MC got some much-needed rest in the final non-conference game of the season. Junior Ebony Williams played just 20 minutes and scored 14 points with four rebounds and three assists. Rodgers added 13 points and four helpers.
Freshman Madelyn Cross had her best game as a Lady Choctaw, recording her first double-double with 14 points and 12 boards. Freshman Mesha Martin scored her first points of the season, pouring in seven in the final minutes.
Centenary was led by Jalena Sanders with 17 points and eight rebounds. Derrany Thomas and Ronny Kendrick each finished with 11 points, while Vashni Sharp-Moore led the team with 10 rebounds.
MC shot 54% (39-72) from the floor and held the Ladies to just 27% (21-77). The Lady Choctaws also held the rebounding edge, 52-41.
The Lady Choctaws will play their home finale on Saturday when they host East Texas Baptist at 1:00 p.m.
