Reading, Pa. (Feb. 14, 2012) - Alvernia University (11-13, 4-9)--led by senior forward Kelli McIntyre (Orwigsburg, Pa. / Blue Mountain)--was bested by Commonwealth Conference rival Messiah College (19-4, 10-2) by a score of 65-48 Tuesday night in women's basketball action at the Physical Education Center.

Since Tuesday's game marked the final home contest for the 2011-12 season Alvernia Head Coach Kevin Calabria honored each of his five seniors prior to the start of the game. Allie Toczylowski (Mantua, N.J. / Clearview Regional), Angela Altemose (Pottsville, Pa. / Nativity BVM), McIntyre, Julie Hahn (Warrington, Pa. / Central Bucks South), and Cece Buzzard (Willow Street, Pa. / Solanco) each received individual recognition. Toczylowski, Altemose and McIntyre have all attained the 1,000-point mark for their career marking the first time in school history that three women from the same class reached the plateau.

Tuesday's first half saw fairly sloppy play from each side. Both Alvernia and Messiah turned the ball over a combined 23 times and forced shots from all over the floor.

McIntyre hit a pair of 3-pointers in the first half to pull her team within four points of the Messiah lead. She finished the half with 13.

At 13:12, Messiah went on an 11-1 run from which the Crusaders could not recover.

With just six seconds remaining in the half, freshman guard, Kaitlyn Yoh (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser), dribbled the length of the floor and scored a layup as time expired leaving Messiah with a 10-point cushion at intermission, 32-22.

Seven minutes into the second half of play, Calabria applied a half court press that seemed to work for a short amount of time as the Crusaders were able to force turnovers. But the second half ultimately belonged to the visitors as they led by at least 10 points for the duration of the half.

Messiah had three players finish in double digits including Taylor Miller who drilled four 3-pointers and scored a game high 17.

The women close out their season in Williamsport when they visit Lycoming College on Saturday.
