CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Brittany Cohen (Fayetteville/Jamesville-DeWitt) registered 17 points, nine assists and three steals and freshman Brittany Rando (Owego/Owego Free Academy) scored a career-high 15 points as Cortland defeated visiting Brockport, 78-58.
The Red Dragons improved to 14-9 overall and remained tied for fourth place in the SUNYAC with Geneseo, each at 9-7 with two games remaining. Cortland hosts Fredonia on Friday night and current league leader Buffalo State Saturday afternoon, while Geneseo hosts Potsdam Friday and Plattsburgh Saturday. The top four teams in the standings will host SUNYAC tournament quarterfinal games next Tuesday, Feb. 21. Cortland and Geneseo are guaranteed to be the fourth and fifth seeds and will play each other in the quarterfinals at whichever school finishes fourth.
Junior Katrina Davenport (Honeoye) added 13 points and three steals off the bench for Cortland in the win over the Golden Eagles. Sophomore Megan Touhey (Maine/Maine-Endwell) hit all three of her three-point attempts and finished with nine points, while senior Molly Byrne (Syracuse/Bishop Ludden) recorded five assists and a team-high seven rebounds.
Cecilia Sigrist Rochester/West Irondequoit) led Brockport (3-20, 0-16 SUNYAC) with 18 points and Phoebe Byrnes (Binghamton) scored 14 points. LaDonya Rolle (Henrietta/Rush-Henrietta) came off the bench to record 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
The teams were tied at 20-20 with 7:55 left in the first half. Cortland led 30-25 with 5:20 remaining before outscoring the Golden Eagles 10-4 the rest of the period to take a 40-29 halftime lead.
Brockport cut a 15-point deficit early in the second half to seven at 48-41 on two Byrnes free throws with 10:30 left. Touhey and Rando hit three-pointers and Davenport scored five straight points to lead an 11-0 Cortland run and the Red Dragons took a 59-41 advantage with 8:06 remaining. Cortland's lead remained at least 11 from that point.
