HOBOKEN, N.J. – A three-point play with two seconds remaining allowed host Stevens (12-12) to hand No. 6/6 William Paterson (23-2) its second loss of the season, 69-68, in women's basketball non-conference action Feb. 14.

The Pioneers took a 68-66 lead with 15 seconds remaining thanks to a pair of free throws from senior all-American guard BriAnna Lucas (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham).  On the ensuing possession, Lucas blocked a layup by Dawn Garcia, but the Ducks' Avis Benjamin came up with the rebound.  Her follow was good to tie the game at 68-68 and Lucas was whistled for a foul.  Benjamin sank the free throw to nudge Stevens ahead by one.  Sophomore guard Floriana Borova's (Cresskill, N.J./Cresskill) three-pointer at the buzzer was no good for WP.

Stevens dominated the opening play, jumping out to a 17-6 lead five minutes into the contest.  William Paterson chipped away during the next 15 minutes, and a layup by senior all-American forward April Smith (Barnegat, N.J./Southern Regional) at the horn allowed the Pioneers to tie the score at 39-39.

Three straight buckets by Lucas, Smith and Borova gave WP its largest advantage of the night, 51-44 with 15:34 to play in the contest.  The Pioneers clung to that lead for the next seven minutes, and owned a 66-61 edge with 4:42 left.  William Paterson then went cold, missing its final six attempts from the floor, and was 1-for-16 (.063) overall from three-point range on the night.

Smith saw her double-double streak snapped at 15 games, scoring a game-high 26 points to go along with eight rebounds.  Lucas had 14 tallies, four assists and three steals, and junior Tatiana Javis (Hillside, N.J./Bloomfield Tech) chipped in 11 points and six boards off the bench.

Jillian Barrett led Stevens with 21 points and nine rebounds.  Garcia added 15 tallies and six assists.

William Paterson will host a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament semifinal game Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 7:00 p.m.
