Early Burst Carries Rochester Past NYU for 19th Win

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The University of Rochester used an early 14-0 run to seize control enroute to a 64-50 victory over New York University at the Louis Alexander Palestra.

Rochester improved to 19-3 overall, 8-3 in the University Athletic Association. The Yellowjackets are one victory shy of their seventh consecutive 20-win season and the 13th such campaign in school history. This is the 41st year of women's basketball as a varsity sport. Rochester is ranked No. 11 by D3hoops.com this week and No. 13 by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.

NYU fell to 10-12 overall with the loss. The Violets are 2-9 in the UAA.

Six players contributed to the burst. Danielle McNabb and Michelle Ketcham sank three-pointers in the run. McNabb started the run with a trey. Loren Wagner closed the spurt with a jumper off a passs from Ally Zywicki. When it was over, Rochester held a 16-4 lead seven minutes into the game.

The Yellowjackets led by as much as 14 points twice, the last time at 7:15 on a jumper by Kristyn Wright from McNabb. It was a 32-20 Rochester lead at the half.

In the second half, the Rochester lead reached 16 before NYU made a run. The Violets narrowed it to eight points twice – first at 40-32 after layups from Bianca Storts and Shelby Coon (12:44 left), then at 48-40 with 7:15 to go – again after layups from Storts and Coon.

Rochester ran off 11 straight points, including three-pointers from Kristyn Wright and Paige Aleski. That boosted the lead to 59-40 with 4:05 remaining in the game. 

The Yellowjackets did not have a double-figure scorer. Wright had nine points. Jackie Walker scored eight and added six rebounds. McNabb scored seven points.

Coon and Alexis Doherty scored 10 points apiece for NYU. Storts grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to accompany her six points.
