Centre rallies to beat Oglethorpe 74-71 in overtime

Trailing by seven points with just over two minutes to play, the Centre College women's basketball team rallied to defeat Oglethorpe University 74-71 in overtime Sunday, Feb. 12 in Atlanta, Ga.

The Colonels (20-2, 13-1, SCAC) fell behind 8-2 in the early going, but scored 10 straight to take its first lead at 12-8. The score was tied twice and the lead changed hands two more times over the next 3:32. With 7:45 on the clock, senior guard Maggie Prewitt (Mt. Sterling, Ky.) broke a 14-14 tie with a three-pointer to give Centre a lead it would keep for the remainder of the half.

The Stormy Petrels fell behind by as many as six late in the opening period, and cut the lead to one with 47 seconds left, but another three-pointer by Prewitt gave the Colonels a 30-26 lead at the break.

Oglethorpe used a 7-0 run early in the second half to take a three-point lead (35-32), but Prewitt hit back-to-back lay-ups and junior guard Bridget Windstead (Franklin, Tenn.) knocked down a three to put Centre in front by four.

Back-to-back three pointers by the Stormy Petrels gave Oglethorpe a lead they would keep until the 6:41 mark when senior guard Alyson Burke (Harrodsburg, Ky.) hit a three-pointer for a 51-49 Centre lead.

The Stormy Petrels again reeled off seven straight points to take a five-point lead, and pushed it to seven when Sarah Giles made a lay-up with 2:03 remaining.

Oglethorpe (8-16 overall, 5-10 SCAC) scored only one more point in regulation as the Colonels used an 8-1 run, including junior Chelsea Benham's (Taswell, Ind.) two free throws to tie the game with only 25 seconds on the clock. Sarah Jones missed a three-point attempt with eight seconds left and the two teams went to overtime.

The extra period featured four ties and three lead changes. Tied at 69-69 with 1:15 to play, Mareva Bone hit a lay-up to give the Stormy Petrals a two-point lead. Benham answered with a lay-up to tie the game again. Prewitt then got a steal, made a lay-up and was fouled with 13 seconds left. The senior guard hit the free throw for the three-point lead and Jones' three-point attempt missed giving Centre the 74-71 overtime victory.

The Colonels finished the day at 41.1% (23-56) from the field, but hit 12 of 24 (50.0%) from beyond the three-point arc and 16 of 19 (84.2%) from the charity stripe. Oglethorpe shot better from the field (45.3%), but was only 7 of 14 (50.0%) from the free throw line.

Prewitt finished with a game-high 25 points to go along with eight assists, five rebounds and four steals. Benham scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds and senior center Lauren Huter(Louisville, Ky.) added 11 points in the win.

Jones led four Stormy Petrels in double figures with 16 points. Bone scored 12 points off the bench, and Katie Weeks and Giles added 11 and 10 points respectively.

With the win, the Colonels recorded their 20th victory of the season, marking the first time a Centre women's basketball team has accomplished that feat since the 2000-2001 season. That team finished 22-6, won the SCAC Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

Centre will return home for the final weekend of the regular season Friday, Feb. 17. The Colonels will host Millsaps College in an SCAC contest set to tip-off at 6 p.m. in Alumni Gymnasium in Danville, Ky.
