ALTOONA, PA - On what was a tough shooting day for both teams, the Medaille women's basketball team used their size and strength in the paint to overwhelm host Penn State-Altoona. The Lady Mavs outscored the Lions (30-12) in the lane en route to a (51-39) AMCC road victory.
The Lady Mavs struggled from the behind the arc all day as they only connected on (2 of 22) from long range. However, their ability to exploit the interior of the Altoona defense was the difference in the game. In addition to outscoring the Lions in the paint the Lady Mavs also dominated the glass as they outrebounded the hosts (44-32) overall and (17-8) on the offensive boards.
Leading the way for Medaille were Joelle Pollak who netted a game high (15) points and dished out a game tying best four assists and Tanisha Travis who knocked down (7 of 14) field goal attempts in a (14) point effort. Travis also collected a game high (12) rebounds for her 11th double/double of the season.
Another huge contributor on the glass was Alicia Montalvo who gathered in (11) caroms from her guard position to aid in the win. Coming off the bench to chip in was Emily Brophy who tallied seven points on (3 of 5) shooting while Mary Bongiovanni was (2 for 4) for four points and a pair of assists off the bench as well.
The win is the 10th straight for Medaille and they improve to (19-4) overall and (14-2) in AMCC play. They remain in sole possession of 2nd place in the conference standings as they prepare to host crosstown rival D'Youville College on Wednesday (2/15) at 8:00pm in a critical AMCC matchup.
