Sophomore forward Taylor Young scored seven of her team-high 10 points during a game-closing 18-5 run over the last 6:50 as host St. Thomas (22-1 overall, 20-0 MIAC) ran its win streak to 22 with Saturday's hard-fought win over the third-place Cobbers (15-8, 13-7) at UST's Schoenecker Arena.
The No. 15-ranked Tommies locked up their second consecutive solo MIAC championship. They also beat the Cobbers in the new Schoenecker venue for the first time in three tries.
UST had a 43-23 rebounding advantage to help overcome 33 percent field-goal shooting. St. Thomas also had a 24-11 edge in bench points. Maggie Weiers had eight points and nien rebounds for UST.
The Cobbers used a 12-0 run to take a 39-35 lead with 6:50 left. Kellie Ring's 3-pointer put UST back in front at 41-39 with 4:53 left. Young's 3-pointer with 2:19 to go pushed the lead to 46-42, and Sarah Smith layup with 1:24 to play kept the lead at four. UST made 5-of-6 free throws in the final minute to pull away.
Alexandra Lippert scored 11 to lead the Cobbers.
