GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. – Gwynedd-Mercy fought off Immaculata, 72-66, on Saturday to win their 11th-straight contest in a Colonial States Athletic Conference tilt.
Sophomore Taylour Alston paced the Griffins (16-6, 12-1 CSAC) with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Brittany Neill and freshman Jess Rotella each added 12 respectively as Gwynedd held a 14-point second half lead and held off the Mighty Macs down the stretch to keep their win streak intact.
Kelly Brown and Bridget Welz scored 18 points apiece for the Mighty Macs (10-11, 8-4 CSAC).
GM would lead by as much as nine early in the first half before Immaculata used a 14-4 spurt capped by a Leah Kuczynski bucket with 5:17 left to take a one-point lead. Neill's three-pointer from the left baseline with just over a minute opened up a five-point edge (36-31). After two free-throws from Kuczynski on what looked to be the final possession of the half, Cotteta was able to beat the buzzer as she knifed through the lane was able to get a tough layin to give GM a 38-33 lead at the break.
The Griffins would gradually turn that four-point lead into a 59-45 edge, their biggest of the contest, with 12:04 on the clock. Immaculata did not go away, pulling within just two (66-64) after a three-pointer from Katie Durkin with 5:47 remaining.
Alston helped the cause, scoring on consecutive offensive sets in the last 1:23 to make it a two-possession game.
Kuczynski finished with 15 points for IU, who shot as a team at a 34.4% (21-of-61) clip but just 3-of-19 from downtown. The Griffins connected on 6-of-15 from beyond the arc while making 39.3% (24-of-61) shooting and 18-of-24 (75.0%) from the line.
GM won the battle of the boards, 44-38. Rotella grabbed eight and Neill pulled down six. Brown led the Mighty Macs with seven.
Gwynedd-Mercy continues play on Wednesday when they travel to Baptist Bible in CSAC action starting at 6 p.m.
