More news about: Stevens

HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 4, 2012) – On the day where the women's basketball program honored the Stevens Institute of Technology Class of 2012, seniors Jillian Barrett (Philadelphia, Pa.), Victoria Webber (Silver Spring, Md.) and Dawn Garcia (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Ducks to an important 70-47 Empire 8 win over Alfred University. Stevens held the Saxons to just 14 points in the first half to set the tone early.

The Ducks forced nine turnovers in the first half and generated nine steals in the first half. Stevens dominated the hustle plays, holding a 41-28 rebounding surplus and a 20-4 advantage in second-chance points. The Ducks also continued to hit their free throws, shooting 92 percent from the stripe for the second-straight game.

Another heartwarming feature of the game was the inclusion of senior Isaura Guzman (Union City, N.J.) in the starting lineup. She has missed all of her final year with various injuries, but the Ducks were able to get her a look for a three-point shot early in the game.

Stevens led-wire-to-wire, and scored 22 of the game's first 26 points. In addition to the strong play from the senior class, the team got good production from sophomore Avis Benjamin (Queens, N.Y.), who had 13 points. A layup by Benjamin with 21 seconds to go in the first gave the Ducks a 24-point halftime lead.

Garcia was 3-of-4 from behind the arc…the Ducks shot 31 percent from downtown as a team, and 48 percent from the field overall…eight different players grabbed rebounds for Stevens, and seven players scored…Alfred was 0-for-11 from three point land in the first half.

The Ducks will travel to Pittsford, N.Y. to take on St. John Fisher College on Friday at 6 p.m. A win coupled with a Nazareth College loss will guarantee a playoff berth for the Ducks.
