Alpine, TX— The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team pulled away in the second half and the Cru rolled to a 75-57 victory over Sul Ross State Saturday afternoon in Alpine. The UMHB women improve to 4-17 overall and 3-14 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The loss drops the Lobos to 2-19 overall and 1-16 in ASC play on the year.
UMHB scored the game's first four points and led 34-29 after a first half that featured seven ties and eight lead changes. The Cru would take its first double-digit lead at 48-38 with 14:41 remaining in the game. Sul Ross closed to within six points at 58-52 midway through the second half before UMHB pulled away again and the Cru closed the game with a 6-0 run to provide the final margin.
Brittany Zamora led UMHB with 19 points and she went 5-6 from three-point range. Miranda Shorter added 14 points on 7-10 shooting and 11 players scored for the Cru. Zamora and Ashlee Adams topped the team with six rebounds apiece. UMHB shot 50 percent from the field in the second half and hit 43 percent for the game. The Cru out rebounded the Lobos 52-36 in the victory.
Candace Pollard and Krista Ford led Sul Ross State with 22 points each. Pollard also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Only five players scored for the Lobos and Sul Ross shot just 31 percent from the field in the game.
The Cru will now return home for a three-game home stand. That stretch will begin with a 5:30 PM tip-off against Hardin-Simmons University on Thursday at the Mayborn Campus Center.
