Freshmen key Blue Devil win over Platteville

PLATTEVILLE (February 4, 2012) - Freshmen Brea Boomer (Grand Portage, Minn), Bethany Reyzer (Altoona) and Courtney Hayford (Owatonna, Minn) led UW-Stout to a 67-61 win over UW-Platteville at Bo Ryan Court.

Boomer had a big game - in particular a big first half. The 5-8 post player scored eight points over the first six minutes of the game to put Stout up early, then contributed off the boards throughout the rest of the afternoon.

Boomer finished witha  team-high 14 points and racked up her first collegiate double-double by pulling down a game-high 13 rebounds, 10 of them defensive boards.

Reyzer scored in double digits for her third consecutive game as the Blue Devils (6-15, 2-10) won their second conference game and their second consecutive game. Reyzer finished with 11 points and a pair of assists. Hayford finished the afternoon by contributing 10 points.

Stout led for the majority of the first half, by as much as 10 points during one spell, but the Pioneers (8-14, 4-9) fought back to take a 41-39 halftime lead. The game remained tight throughout the second half with Platteville taking as much as a five point lead midway through the period.

Stout took the lead with the help of a couple of veterans. Kayla Windt (Jr, Pence) drained a pair of free throws, and Whitney Rawdon (Jr, Eau Claire) hit a bucket, nabbed a steal, then made the ensuing lay-up to give Stout a 59-58 lead at 8:52 and Stout never trailed the rest of the way.

Rawdon finished with nine points and Windt had five steals.

The Pioneers got 15 points from Kim Wellnitz and 13 points from Claire Poad and Liz Lawinger.

Stout will be at UW-La Crosse, Wednesday, Feb. 8 and will host UW-Eau Claire, Saturday, Feb. 11 at 4 p.m.
