DeSanty's record-setting night sinks Beavers

FARMINGTON, Maine -- Taylor DeSanty (North Adams, Mass.) set the Colby-Sawyer College single-game record for scoring with 38 points to lead the Chargers to a 75-52 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington in North Atlantic Conference women's basketball action tonight at Dearborn Gymnasium.

The Beavers (7-12 overall, 6-7 NAC) are scheduled to host New England College Saturday at 1 p.m., while Colby-Sawyer (15-5, 11-2) is set to visit Thomas College Saturday at 1 p.m.

DeSanty, who moved into ninth on the Colby-Sawyer all-time scoring list with 1,078 points, connected on 13 of 18 field-goal attempts and all nine of her free throws. Kelsey Cahill (Cumberland, R.I.) posted eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds in the win, while Cailin Bullett (Millbury, Mass.) handed out eight assists.

After the Chargers held a 30-22 lead at intermission, the Beavers trimmed the lead to 37-33 on a Paige Saunders (Surry, Maine) layup with 15:05 to play. Colby-Sawyer outscored UMF 26-10 over the next seven minutes to take command of the contest. DeSanty tallied 16 points during that span.

Kenni Norton (Strong, Maine) led the Beavers with 12 points followed by Lindsay Ranquist (Owls Head, Maine) with 10 points. Kelsey Graffam (Falmouth, Maine) hauled in 10 rebounds in the loss.

An 8-0 run helped the Chargers take a 15-7 lead with 9:41 remaining in the opening half. DeSanty netted 18 points in the frame as Colby-Sawyer took a 30-22 lead into the break.

The Beavers hung around with the visitors through the opening stages of the second half with a Rachel Clement (Gray, Maine) layup getting the lead down to 32-29 with 17:37 left to play. After a Ashley Fruzzetti (Raynham, Mass.) three and a Cahill basket boosted Colby-Sawyer's lead back to 37-29, Ranquist and Saunders hit a basket each to make it 37-33.

Colby-Sawyer led 40-35 before reeling off 10 straight points with a Kelsey Bragdon (Wells, Maine) trey making it 50-35 with 12:40 to play. A Norton basket cooled the run, but DeSanty scored all of the points in the Chargers' 12-3 run to push the advantage to 63-43 with 7:57 remaining.

The Beavers chiseled the lead down to 63-51 on a Ranquist 3-pointer with 5:05 to go, but the Chargers closed the game on a 12-1 run to finish off the 75-52 victory.
