Washington's Second Half Overcomes Rochester, 60-55

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Melissa Gilkey scored 19 points and Maddy Scheppers added 15 more as visiting Washington (MO) University defeated the University of Rochester, 60-55, in a matchup of top 10 women's basketball teams at the Louis Alexander Palestra.

Scheppers grabbed 10 rebounds while Gilkey blocked four shots. No one else scored in double figure points for the Bears (16-3 overall, 6-2 UAA) but the visitors got help in other areas. Dani Hoover had four steals and four assists. Brianne Monahan had three steals and one block. Washington had 15 steals from 22 Rochester turnovers and produced 16 points. Washington (16-3 overall, 6-2 UAA) is ranked No. 8 in the D3hoops.com poll and No. 13 in the WBCA poll.

Laney Ming scored 13 points with eight assists for the Yellowjackets (17-2, 6-2 UAA). Danielle McNabb scored nine points and Ally Zywicki had eight points. Rochester is ranked No. 5 in the D3hoops.com poll, No. 6 by the WBCA. The Yellowjackets defeated Washington, 72-70, in St. Louis a week ago. 

Neither team shot well in the first half – Rochester at 32.3% (10/31) and Washington at 33% (9/27). The Bears found their shooting touch in the second half, hitting 12 of 23 from the floor (52.2%), including four of six outside the arc. Rochester shot 37.9% (11/29) and 25% outside the arc (2/8).

Washington opened the second half on a 10-4 run to open a 34-30 lead three minutes in. It grew to eight points after a three pointer by Scheppers and one free throw by Alexandra Keane (54-46 at 5:29).

McNabb had two free throws, then sank a three-pointer to cut it to 54-51 with 4:02 left. Rochester had a chance to tie at 54-all in the final 40 seconds but Kristyn Wright's three-pointer from left wing rattled in and out. Washington made four free throws – two by Hoover – to finish the win.
