SELINSGROVE, Pa. (January 7, 2012) – Despite leading for the majority of the contest, Drew (4-7, 1-1 Landmark) fell to Susquehanna (4-9, 1-1 Landmark), 62-59 tonight on the road. Danielle Barber (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Twp.) scored 19 points to go along with seven rebounds and five assists.
Barber scored the majority of her points from behind the arc, sinking five 3-pointers in 38 minutes of action. Senior Victoria Ault (Middletown, N.J./Mater Dei) helped pace the Rangers offense with 10 points and was a rebound shy of a double-double.
Korey McCaffrey of the Crusaders led all scorers with 22 points, going 8-for-9 from the field and a perfect 4-4 from 3-point land. Gina Palazzi recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds to balance the Crusader attack.
The first half saw Drew jump out to a quick, 9-2 lead before a Palazzi layup at 15:25 cut the lead to five. With 8:05 on the clock, the Rangers took their first double-digit lead (19-8) on a Brianna Reich (Sea Bright, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) layup. At the sound of the halftime horn the Rangers found themselves with a 28-20 advanatage.
The second half proved to be all Susquehanna as the Crusaders outscored the visiting Rangers 42-31 over the final 20 minutes. With 7:10 remaining, Eleni Dimou sank a three to make it 52-50 and followed that with a layup on SU's next possession 30 seconds later to knot the game at 52. That layup was part of three-point play by Dimou that handed SU its first lead of the game at 53-52.
Drew never again regained the lead. SU led by four, its largest lead of the evening, after two Amarra Boone free throws made it 57-53 with 3:22 on the clock.
A three from Barber made it a one-point contest (60-59), but two McCaffrey free throws with two seconds to play sealed the win for the Crusaders.
The Rangers will be right back at it tomorrow as the close their first Landmark Conference weekend with a matchup against Juniata at 4:00 p.m.
