NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 28, 2012 –Colby-Sawyer junior Taylor DeSanty (North Adams, Mass.) became the 12th women's basketball player in school history to reach 1,000 career points as she scored 26 in an 89-58 win over Johnson State, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play on Saturday afternoon.
The Chargers improve to 13-5 overall and 9-2 in the NAC. Johnson falls to 4-14 overall and 2-10 in conference play.
DeSanty moved into 11th on the all-time list with 1021 points and passed Emma Pasquale '09 who recorded 1005 career points. DeSanty played 21 minutes and knocked down 10-15 shots, including 3-7 from beyond the arc. She also moved into fifth place on the school's all-time career three pointers list with 136.
Junior Cailin Bullett (Millbury, Mass.) recorded a double-double for the Chargers with 20 points and a game best 10 assists. Sophomore Ashley Fruzzetti (Raynham, Mass.) was the third Colby-Sawyer player to reach double-figures with 14 points. Freshman Deryn Zahoruiko (Amesbury, Mass.) scored seven points and pulled down five rebounds.
The Badgers were led by freshman Brittany Robertson (Burlington, Vt.), who poured in 26 points. She added five rebounds and a game-high four steals. Senior Andrea Deuell (Milton, Vt.) was the other Johnson player to reach double-figures with 20 points.
Colby-Sawyer began the game on a 14-3 run, which included 10 points by DeSanty. The Chargers held onto a double-figure lead throughout most of the first half thanks to 60.6% shooting from the floor. The Chargers led just 31-23 with seven minutes left to play, but finished the frame on a 23-0 run to take a 54-23 advantage into the locker room.
The home team pushed its lead to 49 with 9:34 to go in the second half, but Johnson State kept fighting and brought the game back to the halftime margin of 31.
The Chargers shot 50% from the floor and scored 46 points in the paint. Colby-Sawyer out-rebounded Johnson 52-30.
Colby-Sawyer travels to New England College on Tuesday for a 5:30 pm tip. Johnson plays at Lyndon on Tuesday also at 5:30 pm.
