Warhawks' Eight Game Win Streak Ends at Point

UW-Whitewater's eight game win streak came to an end in Berg Gym at UW-Stevens Point Wednesday night with the Warhawks 80-58 loss. 

With UW-Whitewater leading 19-17 on a three pointer by Sam Quandt (Hayward/Hayward) at 10:24, the Pointers reeled off the next nine points to lead 26-19 at 4:30. Whitewater guard Mary Merg (Greendale/Greendale) made a layup at 4:02 followed by a jumper from junior center Steff Glynn (Eagan, MN/Eastview) at 3:23 pulled Whitewater within three, 26-23. Stevens Point closed the half with a 10-0 run to send the teams into the locker room with UW-SP leading 36-23.

Whitewater shot 33% from the floor in the first half while the Pointers hit 47% of their field goals. 

Point maintained its double digit lead, increasing it to 44-25 with 16:57 on the clock.  Over the next eight minutes Whitewater whittled the lead to nine, 59-50 with 7:38 left in the game.  UW-W also trailed by nine at 61-52, but the Pointers out-scored the Warhawks 19-6 over the remaining minutes of the game.

UW-W's wound up shooting 33% in the game, including a 0-6 mark from beyond the arc in the second half.  The Pointers upped their first half stats to 53% shooting for the game, hitting 5-8 on three point shots.  The Warhawks committed 25 turnovers, to 15 for UW-SP, and the Pointers dished out 23 assists to 8 for Whitewater.

Three Warhawks scored in double figures, led by Merg's 14 points; with senior guard Jamie Swanson (Fox Lake, IL/Grant Community) adding 12 and junior center Cortney Kumerow (Bartlett/South Elgin) scoring 11.  Senior forward Chantel Burg (Hartford/Hartford Union) led UW-W with nine rebounds and three assists.  UW-SP senior center Ashley Averkamp took game scoring honors with 24 points, followed by junior guard Sam Barber's 18 and junior guard Brooke Allen's ten.  Barber earned a double-double, also pulling down 11 rebounds.  The Pointer guard tandem of Alyssa Olp and Cassie Bandow dished out seven and six assists, respectively.  Allen was the game leader with five steals.

UW-W is 14-5 overall and 6-4 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.  UW-SP is 16-3 overall and 8-2 in the league.

Whitewater will host UW-Eau Claire, the WIAC leader at 9-1, at 3:00 Saturday in Kachel Gym of Williams Center.
