SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior guard Emily Savino (Ellington, CT) led a balanced scoring attack with 19 points as the Western New England women's basketball team posted a 70-48 victory over Gordon Wednesday evening (Jan. 25) at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.
This was the third win in the last four contests for the Golden Bears who are 7-10 overall and 6-4 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC). The Fighting Scots are now 6-11 overall and 1-9 in the CCC.
Savino made 7-of-11 shots from the field, including 5-of-6 three-pointers, and was among four players scoring in double figures.
Sophomore guard Ali Pessolano (Hampden, MA) added 12 points while sophomore guard Katie Eckert (Lee, MA) compiled her first career double-double with 11 point and 10 rebounds. Junior guard Shelby Van Huysen (Killingworth, CT) contributed 10 points, six rebounds, and four steals coming off the bench.
Western New England led 33-22 at halftime, but Gordon hung around trailing by nine at 40-31 following a three-pointer by freshman guard Aly Towle (Rochester, NH) at the 15:02 mark.
Freshman forward Leanna Tallamy (Wantage, NJ) made a layup that got the visitors within 49-40 with 7:56 remaining.
The Golden Bears then went on a 16-3 run over the next six minutes to break the game open.
Tallamy finished with an impressive double-double of 28 points and 16 rebounds in a terrific performance. She was 12-for-20 from the field and also had two steals. Freshman guard Brooke Kratche (Chagrin Falls, OH) chipped-in with 10 points.
Western New England connected on 45.6% of its field-goal attempts and made 9-of-19 three-pointers for 47.4%. Gordon shot only 33.9% from the field. WNE also had a 42-35 edge in rebounding.
Western New England swept the series with Gordon after earlier gaining a 63-52 victory back on November 30 in Wenham, Massachusetts.
