Reading, Pa. (Jan. 23, 2012) - Sophomore Kelsey Gill (State College, Pa./State College Area) nearly doubled her career-high with 11 rebounds and tallied 10 points for her first double-double to spark Alvernia University (8-8) past Immaculata University (8-9) by a 70-56 final Monday evening in non-conference women's basketball action at the Physical Education Center.
"This was Kelsey Gill MVP night", said Crusader Head Coach Kevin Callabria. Callabria also credited his assistant AJ Caldonetti for making the decision to go with Gill. "AJ just felt it was time. He's been watching her in practice and said her facial expressions have been positive."
Senior center Angela Altemose (Pottsville, Pa./Nativity BVM) scored 17 pionts after totaling 52 points in the Crusaders' last two games, an impressive statistic that earned her Alvernia's Athlete of the Week Award.
Although the Crusaders dominated the majority of the second half, Immaculata--which had led by as many as seven points in the first half--was able to pull to within one after sinking back to back 3-pointers with 12:02 remaining in the game. "I don't know why we have trouble defending 3's", Calabria admitted. "It happened the other day at E-town."
Senior guard Kelli McIntyre (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain) also contributed to the Crusader victory on both ends of the court. Aside playing solid defense, McIntyre shot 5-11 from beyond the arc and posted a season high 24 points.
With the win against the Mighty Macs, Alvernia pulls to an 8-8 record on the year and a dominating 21-1 all time record against Immaculata. Calabria's team has also posted a 5-1 record at home this season.
The women are back in action Wednesday when they travel to Grantham to take on division rival Messiah College.
