With its fourth straight win, Southern Maine improves to 14-4 overall and 6-2 in the Little East Conference. Plymouth State falls to 2-14 and 0-8 in the conference suffering its eighth straight loss.
The Huskies overcame a sluggish first half to score 51 points in the second stanza en route to the win. Jordan was 11-for-22 from the field en route to the game-high total, while her career-high 16 rebounds helped the Huskies to a commanding 56-29 edge on the boards. Senior forward Courtney Cochran (Waite, Maine/Woodland) snagged her team-leading ninth double-double of the season with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Cochran was 10-for-13 from the field. Senior guard Nicole Garland (Portland, Maine/Deering) tossed in 12 points and had a game-high five assists and junior forward Jordan Grant (Concord, N.H.) added 10 points, nine rebounds and four assists on a 5-for-8 effort from the floor.
Junior guard Sam Monohon (Auburn, N.H./Manchester Trinity) led the Panthers with 14 points on a perfect 5-for-5 mark from the floor. Senior guard Michaela Galvin (Windham, N.H./Salem) added 13 points and three assists, while junior guard Kellie Walsh (Londonderry, N.H.) chipped in with 11 points.
Tied at 17 points each with 11:04, the Huskies closed out the half outscoring the Panthers 18-9 to take a modest nine point, 35-26, lead at the break. Jordan scored 11 of her 25 points in the opening half, while the Panthers kept paced with Southern Maine thanks in part to eight points from Walsh.
After a three-pointer from Walsh to start the half to pull PSU to within six, 35-26, the Huskies pulled away from the Panthers with a 12-0 run to lead 47-29 with 16:31 remaining. Four different players scored for USM in the run, led by six points from Garland on back-to-back three-pointers.
The Panthers countered with a 9-2 run, including five straight points from Monohon, to whittle the Huskies' lead to 11, 49-38, with just under 14 minutes to play, but the Huskies' shut the door on outscoring the Panthers 21-6 over the next seven and half minutes for a 70-44 lead. Attacking the Panthers from all five positions on the floor, seven different players scored for the Huskies, led by seven points from Jordan.
PSU pulled to within 20 of USM, 71-51, with 3:53 on the clock following a layup from Monohon, but the Huskies finished the game on a 15-2 run for the 86-53 final.
Southern Maine finished the game shooting 52.9 percent (36-for-68) from the floor and outscored the Panthers 50-20 in the paint. Plymouth State shot 28.4 percent (19-for-67) from the field.
Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) when it hosts Western Connecticut State University. Plymouth State hosts UMass Dartmouth on Saturday (1:00 p.m.).
