Captains Dominant Defense Leads to Eighth Straight Win, 65-34

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Head coach Jon Waters and the Christopher Newport University women's basketball team posted one of the most dominant defensive efforts in program history today, blowing past William Peace University (2-14, 1-8) in a 65-34 final. The Captains improved to 13-3 overall, 8-1 in the USA South after holding the Pacers to just eight points in the first half.

CNU built a 22-point lead at halftime, leading 30-8 after Peace was able to knock down just three shots against the tough Christopher Newport defense. The Pacers were just 3-for-25 for a 12% shooting percentage in the first half.

It was a 12-2 run to start the game that gave CNU the double digit lead just nine minutes into the game. Senior Kimmy Hopkins and sophomore Tia Perry each had four points in the early run. Derrica Jones had a stickback layup to make the score 16-6 with 10:42 remaining in the first half, but the Captains defense took over from that point.

CNU held Peace without a basket in the final 10:42 of the first half, allowing just two made free-throws and going 0-for-10 from the field. Hopkins and Perry each added four more points to lead the way with eight in the first half, while Perry added six rebounds and four assists.

CNU balanced the attack in the second half, getting ten players into the scoring column while no one played more than 21 minutes in the game. Rookie Camry Green made the most of her 19 minutes of action, posting her second career double-double with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. She added a pair of blocks and a perfect 4-for-4 day at the free-throw line for CNU.

The Captains bench scored 35 points, led by Green and reserve forward Kiara Marks. Marks poured in seven points and grabbed four rebounds in just five minutes of action. The offense was efficient, assist on 20 of the 26 made field goals in the game. Hopkins finished with a game-high 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Defensively, CNU held Peace to just 19.6% shooting in the game, registering five blocks and seven steals.

Peace improved from the field in the second half, knocking down 7-of-26 attempts for 26.9% shooting. The Pacers were led by Jones, finishing with eight points and three rebounds, while leading scorer Crystal Alston added six points and six boards.

CNU will return to action on Tuesday, January 24, as they continue the conference road swing at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Va. The game will tip at 7:00 pm.
