UW-Whitewater extended its win streak to eight with a 72-55 win at UW-Stout in Menomonie, Wisconsin Saturday.
The Warhawks never trailed in the game. With the game tied 12-12, Whitewater ran off the next nine points for a 21-12 lead with 6:59 left in the half. A three-pointer by Mary Merg (Greendale/Greendale) gave UW-W its first double digit lead, 24-14 at 6:10. A 7-0 spurt by Whitewater just before the half ended pushed the margin to 35-17, the largest of the half. The teams went into the lockerroom with Whitewater in front 35-19.
Whitewater's defense limited Stout to 23% field goal shooting, including an 0-6 half from beyond the arc. Whitewater held a 23-14 advantage on the boards, and the defense led to 16 points off Blue Devil turnovers. Whitewater's Cortney Kumerow (Bartlett/South Elgin) led both teams with 14 points, hitting 6-7 shots from the field. Teammate Chantel Burg (Hartford/Hartford Union) gathered in eight rebounds in the half.
Whitewater rolled in the second half, three times accumulating a 33-point margin. That proved to be too much of a mountain to climb for the Blue Devils, with the final score the closest UW-S got in the second half.
UW-W kept the Blue Devil long range shooters in check, with UW-S make 1-15 three point field goal attempts. UW-W earned 25 points off Stout turnovers. Merg, a sophomore guard, led UW-W with 20 points, hitting 5-9 shots, including 3-5 on threes, and making all seven of her free throws. Kumerow ended up with 18, and Chantel Burg (Hartford/Hartford Union) contributed nine rebounds and five assists, both game highs. Stout was led by Whitney Rawdon and Brea Boomer, both scoring 11 points, Rawdon also led the Blue Devils with six rebounds.
UW-W is 14-4 overall and 6-3 in the WIAC. Stout is 4-14 and 0-9.
The Warhawks will travel to UW-Stevens Point Wednesday. The next home game for UW-W will be Saturday, January 28 at 3:00 versus UW-Eau Claire.
