In a battle between two of the top teams in the SUNYAC, it was SUNY Oneonta that came out on top of defending conference champion Geneseo tonight 53-48.  Senior Madison Slagle scored a game high 22 points in leading the Red Dragons to the victory to keep them atop the SUNYAC standings.  The win pushes Oneonta to 9-5 overall and 7-1 in the SUNYAC while Geneseo falls to 10-5 overall and 5-3 in conference play.

Oneonta captured the lead for good on a Samantha Szkotak free throw to give Oneonta a 33-32 lead in the second half.  Back-to-back baskets by Szkotak and Slagle pushed Oneonta's lead to 37-32 with 8:52 remaining in the contest.

Geneseo came out of halftime and scored nine unanswered points to grab the lead at 32-27.  Freshman Shannon McGinnis scored four of Geneseo's nine points in the run.  McGinnis finished the game with nine points.

The game remained close and Geneseo made the game interesting in the closing minute as the two teams exchanged free throws.  A technical foul after a foul was called on Oneonta on a three point attempt gave Geneseo five free throws trailing 51-44 with eight seconds remaining.  Geneseo made 4-of-5 to pull within three points at 51-48.

Slagle was fouled on the ensuing in-bounds play and she made her two free throws to ice the game for the Red Dragons.

The first half saw both teams combine for 26 three-point shots attempted with Oneonta hitting four to Geneseo's two.  Oneonta held its largest lead at 27-18 after a lay-up by sophomore Kristin Pappalardo with 3:17 remaining in the half.  The Red Dragons didn't register another basket in the half as Geneseo cut the lead to 27-23 heading into the break.

Pappalardo had six points and a team high nine rebounds.  Sophomore Lea Sobieraski led Geneseo with 13 points to go along with seven boards.

Oneonta will be home again tomorrow afternoon when they host Brockport.  Tip-off is scheduled for 2pm.
