Secino leads the way for the Falcons with 15 point effort
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. (January 21, 2012) – The Fitchburg State women's basketball team battled the Trailblazers of MCLA this afternoon, falling on the road, 90-64 in MASCAC action.
MCLA received a pair of double-double efforts from senior Alie Dobrovolc (Little Falls, N.Y./Little Falls) and classmate Jen Wehner (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) who combined for 49 points in the contest. Dobrovolc led the way for the Trailblazers, finishing with 25 points and 11 rebounds, while Wehner added 24 points, 18 rebounds, and seven blocked shots.
The first half saw MCLA jump out quickly thanks to the efforts of Wehner. The senior center registered 17 points in the half, leading the Trailblazers to an opening 15-4 run. The Falcons battled back as sophomore Meaghan Secino (Leominster, Mass./Saint Bernards) caught fire from behind the arc, connecting on four three pointers during a 16-6 surge to bring Fitchburg State back within a point at 21-20.
Fitchburg State eventually tied the game up at 28-28 on a Madison Marek (New Ipswich, N.H./Saint Bernards) triple, but MCLA used a closing 15-7 string to take a 43-35 lead at the intermission.
In the second half, MCLA took over, using an opening 25-5 explosion to clinch its ninth victory of the season. Dobrovolc paved the way for the Trailblazers in second half, totaling 14 points in the frame, while freshman Gina Angelini (Fitchburg, Mass./Leominster) totaled ten points for the Falcons.
For the contest, Fitchburg State was led by Secino's 15 points, while junior Kelsey Johnston (Shirley, Mass./Saint Bernards) and Angelini chipped in with ten apiece. MCLA held a commanding 60-37 rebounding edge while holding Fitchburg State to just 28% shooting from the floor.
Fitchburg State (14-3, 2-3 MASCAC) will be back in action on Tuesday as it visits Westfield State at 5:30 p.m. MCLA (9-8, 3-2 MASCAC) will host Bridgewater State on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
