HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 20, 2012) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team ended its game with Nazareth College on an 8-0 run to earn a big comeback win over their Empire 8 rivals on Friday evening. Jillian Barrett (Philadelphia, Pa.) led all scorers with 15 points and notched another double-double, finishing the contest with 10 rebounds. Victoria Webber (Silver Spring, Md.) helped key the Stevens comeback with her dozen points and Jen Thompson (Linwood, N.J.) had a huge steal and converted the game-clinching free throws in the final seconds.
For the second-straight outing the Ducks were part of a nail-biter, this one featuring four ties and six lead changes. Also for the second-straight game, Stevens found itself trailing by one point at the break.
This time, though, the Ducks would rally for the important conference victory. Webber and Thompson hit back-to-back threes with 16 minutes remaining to give Stevens their first lead of the second half.
Webber then converted a layup and was fouled in a play that ignited the crowd and cut the Golden Flyer lead in half with 5:25 left in the game.
Avis Benjamin's (Queens, N.Y.) lay-in with four minutes remaining kicked off the final run, as Stevens held Naz without any points over the final five minutes of the game. The Ducks D also did not allow a score for a previous five minute stretch, that one covering the 18-13 minute time of the second half.
It was a Barrett layup with 1:12 showing on the scoreboard that finally tied the game. Dawn Garcia (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had a steal on the ensuing possession, and – after a timeout – Webber took the ball to the hole, drew a foul and made both free throws to give the Ducks the 45-43 lead.
With 10 seconds remaining, Nazareth called timeout with possession in the Ducks' zone and still trailing by just two. Thompson came up with a huge steal on the inbounds pass, was promptly fouled and headed to the line with a chance to ice the game.
Both of the sophomore's shots did not even brush the rim as she made it a two-possession game with just eight seconds left. Stevens hung on to win as the final shot ricocheted harmlessly off the backboard.
Critical to the Ducks' late-game rally was their defensive discipline. Stevens did not commit a second-half foul until five minutes remained, and still had three fouls to give at the end of the game. The Ducks forced 19 Naz turnovers and scored 22 points off of them, which proved to be the deciding column on the stat sheet.
Katie Kollar (Johnstown, N.Y.) led Naz with 13 points…Thompson scored eight off the bench for Stevens….Stevens and Naz combined to shoot just 33 percent for the night.
Stevens will turn right around and take on St. John Fisher Saturday afternoon. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
