(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson College women's basketball team suffered a 76-51 setback to visiting Johns Hopkins University on Saturday.
A strong start by Hopkins put the Blue Jays in front, 7-2, as they built an 11 point lead at the 9:20 mark of the first half. After the Devils pulled even, 11-11, Hopkins went on an 11-0 run to double-up the Devils, 22-11.
The Red Devils rallied again, pulling within four, 24-20, with 4:13 to play in the half. The Blue Jays stretched the margin back to 11, and held a 33-24 advantage at the break.
Another quick start by the Blue Jays put them in front by 13 and built to 18 with 12:16 remaining in the game. The Devils struggled from the field, shooting just 23 percent on the second half as Hopkins remained in control down the stretch.
Chantel Mattiola scored a game-high 16 points, adding four rebounds while Alex Vassila tallied 13 points and nine rebounds to lead Johns Hopkins (6-1, 3-1).
Junior Belma Mekic (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) led the Devils with 13 points and three steals, hitting 5-of-6 free throws on the night. Classmate Bridget Borgese (Swarthmore, Pa./Notre Dame de Namur) hit 6-of-8 from the free throw line, scoring eight points.
First-year Liz Schultz (Dunmore, Pa./Scranton Prep) added eight points while senior Taylor Miller (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) chipped in with seven points and six rebounds.
First-year Gillian Ferko (Palmerton, Pa./Marian Catholic) tallied seven points and five rebounds, converting 5-of-6 free throws. Kellie Nissen (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) gave quality minutes off the bench, scoring six points.
The Red Devils slip to 1-6 overall and 1-3 in the Centennial Conference. They travel to Juniata College on Tuesday night for a non-conference match-up with the Eagles. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
